Staying Authentic In a Hyped-Up, Celebrity-Centric World: Gina Kirschenheiter, Star of The Real Housewives of Orange County and Co-Founder of CaraGala

If you've listened to our podcast, WHERE BRAINS MEET BEAUTY™, you no doubt know that I'm obsessed with Bravo, and specifically with the Real Housewives franchise. So, it was a particular thrill to welcome Gina Kirschenheiter, star of The Real Housewives of Orange County, to the show. We recorded our episode live in front of an audience in the beautiful Allure store in Soho as a joint celebration with the launch of my new book, Facing the Seduction of Success. It was a fabulous party and a chance for me to forge a new friendship with someone I admired. While the situations presented in The Real Housewives shows are clearly contrived, they reveal a great deal about character as the cast reacts to their circumstances, their stresses, and each other. What impresses me about Gina is how she manages to face these challenges in an open, vulnerable, and authentic way that obviously resonates with the show's viewers. She really has her head on straight about the show — what she loves about...

Two Different Directions, One Common Goal: Rebecca Boston Chief Marketing Officer, True Botanicals

One of my favorite opening questions to my podcast guests is, "What did your 11-year-old self want to be when you grew up?" If you follow the podcast, WHERE BRAINS MEET BEAUTY™, or have read my new book, Facing the Seduction of Success, you know how this has proven to be a great way to jumpstart a conversation. At age 11, my guest this week, Rebecca Boston, Chief Marketing Officer of True Botanicals, was passionate about makeup and had a career goal of becoming a Mary Kay lady, lured in part by the possibility of a pink Cadillac. When it came time for college, her interests had pivoted to politics, and she studied public affairs, thinking that would be her way of positively impacting the world. She could not have known then that her career journey would lead her back to the beauty world — although not the Mary Kay beauty world of her tween years — where she would discover that there are lots of ways to contribute to the planet and that marketing clean, sustainable beauty is one of...

Design for Life and Follow Your Happiness with Lindsay McCormick, Founder and CEO of Bite Toothpaste Bits

When did you last think about what your 11-year-old self wanted to be when you grew up? If you follow my podcast, WHERE BRAINS MEET BEAUTY™, or have read my new book, Facing the Seduction of Success, you know that I often ask my podcast guests about their childhood dream and how they saw their future long ago. As curious as a child as she is today, my guest this week, Lindsay McCormick, founder and CEO of Bite Toothpaste Bits, wanted to be everything — an astronaut, an archeologist, an FBI agent, to name a few — and her dream changed almost weekly. That jumping around continued through and even after college, as she tried different jobs that interested her. (We laughed about her first job as a Christmas elf at the local mall who helped kids realize their dream of sitting on Santa's lap, an experience often accompanied by fears and tears that it was Lindsay's job to soothe.) In those early years, she was also a surfing instructor, a snowboarding instructor, a bartender, and, of...

The Puzzle Pieces We Put Together to Create Holistic Marketing Campaigns

Recently, Base Beauty’s COO Aleni Mackarey, Ph.D., MS, and Emily Horrego, our Senior Digital Marketing Strategist, led a webinar for Brandwatch that explores how we use data to drive our creativity. (Here is a link to the Brandwatch case study on Base Beauty.) This expansive webinar provided a wealth of thinking and learning into how we optimize the data we gather and combine it with our creative concepts and execution. Part of their presentation focused on community management tools, offering an in-depth discussion of how our community engagement coordinators—the front-line staffers of a brand’s outreach—seed conversations, gather insights, analyze learning, and feed it all to other departments within our agency as we create omnichannel programs. Brandwatch has become a trusted partner in our data collection, helping us listen deeply, identify trends, and focus on solutions to share across our teams for planning paid searches, forging influencer relationships, pitching PR...

Are You Willing to Risk It? Shontay Lundy, Creator and Founder of Black Girl Sunscreen

The President of the United States. A violinist. A race-car driver. What do these professions have in common? Other than being pretty cool jobs, these titles were all of interest to a 10-year-old Shontay Lundy, who'd eventually become the creator and founder of her own brand — Black Girl Sunscreen. Though she didn't become a race-car driver, she definitely identifies herself as someone with a need for speed — meaning, she's an avid risk-taker. And once you read her story, you'll understand why I absolutely agree. She's taken a lot of huge risks in her life — the most pronounced being straight after college. Rather than returning home to her parents like many post-graduates do, she decided to immediately start a life of her own. Without a clear idea of what she wanted to do career-wise, she took to driving her car to Miami to pursue her masters and find a part-time job. On top of not having a job, she also didn't have a place to live — but leave it to Shontay to figure out a way....

Fill Up Your Cup — Living a Meaningful Life with Shannon Goldberg, Founder and CEO of Izzy Zero Waste Beauty

We're in an age of change — both collectively and individually. As we open our eyes (and minds) to the ways in which we can do better by ourselves, for the environment, and for society at large, we're also faced with an increased pressure to be the change that we wish to see in the world. It's all very overwhelming, right? Shannon Goldberg, Founder and CEO of Izzy Zero Waste Beauty, has a solution for this feeling, in response to the global environmental crisis. The problem, she contests, isn't necessarily on an individual level — it's the responsibility of the businesses that supply the wasteful materials that should be setting the example. Whatever's most convenient for the consumer is what is going to sell — Shannon believes that the biggest changes come through industry leaders taking charge. Hence why Izzy Zero Waste Beauty's vision for sustainable, environmentally-friendly future is so appropriate, and pertinent, to the challenges faced in the beauty industry today. For...

Reaching Out to Consumers with Empathy

As creative marketers, our job can be simply stated: to educate the consumer about our clients’ product(s) and gracefully guide her through an informed and effortless journey to purchase. Our team at Base Beauty Creative Agency always, always, always keeps this top of mind. How lucky we are to be working in a time when we can hear directly—and frequently—from consumers through social media. The ability to listen, interact with, and respond to consumers is a powerful tool not available to marketers even a decade ago. Base Beauty’s COO Aleni Mackarey, Ph.D., MS, and Emily Horrego, our Senior Digital Marketing Strategist, recently hosted a webinar in collaboration with Brandwatch, illuminating how to use community management to gain insights into what consumers want. Emily spoke of how community managers are on the front line of listening to consumers, hearing their questions (e.g., how do I choose a tinted sunscreen?), figuring out where they are confused (e.g., in what order should I...

No Silos Here: Using Community Management to Fuel Agency-Wide Holistic Marketing Strategies

Recently, Base Beauty’s COO Aleni Mackarey, Ph.D., MS, and Emily Horrego, our Senior Digital Marketing Strategist, led a webinar as part of our agency’s data collection partnership with Brandwatch. Along with lots of wisdom on how BBCA uses data to drive creativity, their presentation focused on the pipeline that lets the data we collect and analyze flow through to every department. This is how we create genuinely holistic solutions for our beauty and wellness clients. As Emily emphasized, community managers are the front-line soldiers, the meet-and-greet team, creating that first impression between the brand and potential customers. So, it’s essential to empower them with all the tools they need to present your brand’s messaging in the most robust way as they gather data through social listening and learn what’s resonating with the audience and what’s not. They’re the ones who first see the trends, the questions, the tell-me-more comments, and the degree of buzz being created for...

She’s a Survivor and She Can Do Anything — Sinead Norenius-Raniere

Even as a child, Sinead Norenius-Raniere, VP of Product at Cision, knew that she wanted to accomplish a lot. At one point she remembers wanting to be a nurse. Then a policewoman. Both didn’t pan out, but it turned out to be the best thing that could’ve happened for her. One career stood out — makeup artistry. Her journey began in Santa Barbara where she began working at a local salon as a makeup artist. It wasn’t exactly what she was going for (she wanted a career in aesthetic beauty), so she decided to go back to her home in San Francisco to get her aesthetic license. This, as she describes, was her entry point into the wild west of beauty. Seeing as our theme this quarter is technology, I was intrigued by Sinead’s approach to the topic. Sinead has seen a tonne of evolution in the industry and has worked to strengthen beauty’s tie to technology. How does she envision technology as a part of her future vision for Cision? Initially, she was brought in to help reimagine the online...

The Woman Who’s Determined to Change the World

Did you know that there are two different types of aging — biological age and chronological age? That’s what Carolina Reis Oliveira, Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer of OneSkin, is most fascinated by. Her vision is squarely on reversing the effects of biological aging on the development of age-related diseases. As we grow older, we become more at risk of developing diseases such as Alzheimer’s and cancer. The underlying factor is that of age, and so for Carolina, finding a way to treat the biological aging process through rejuvenation is the key to solving a number of age-related diseases. Her exploration started in Brazil when she took up an active interest in science and health, starting at 11. She was intrigued by the power of science and its ability to improve human health. And so she took to studying genetic engineering, with a special focus on manipulating DNA. She then majored in biochemistry, prompting her to receive her Ph.D. in stem-cell biology and tissue...
