Staying Authentic In a Hyped-Up, Celebrity-Centric World: Gina Kirschenheiter, Star of The Real Housewives of Orange County and Co-Founder of CaraGala

If you've listened to our podcast, WHERE BRAINS MEET BEAUTY™, you no doubt know that I'm obsessed with Bravo, and specifically with the Real Housewives franchise. So, it was a particular thrill to welcome Gina Kirschenheiter, star of The Real Housewives of Orange County, to the show. We recorded our episode live in front of an audience in the beautiful Allure store in Soho as a joint celebration with the launch of my new book, Facing the Seduction of Success. It was a fabulous party and a chance for me to forge a new friendship with someone I admired. While the situations presented in The Real Housewives shows are clearly contrived, they reveal a great deal about character as the cast reacts to their circumstances, their stresses, and each other. What impresses me about Gina is how she manages to face these challenges in an open, vulnerable, and authentic way that obviously resonates with the show's viewers. She really has her head on straight about the show — what she loves about...

Two Different Directions, One Common Goal: Rebecca Boston Chief Marketing Officer, True Botanicals

One of my favorite opening questions to my podcast guests is, "What did your 11-year-old self want to be when you grew up?" If you follow the podcast, WHERE BRAINS MEET BEAUTY™, or have read my new book, Facing the Seduction of Success, you know how this has proven to be a great way to jumpstart a conversation. At age 11, my guest this week, Rebecca Boston, Chief Marketing Officer of True Botanicals, was passionate about makeup and had a career goal of becoming a Mary Kay lady, lured in part by the possibility of a pink Cadillac. When it came time for college, her interests had pivoted to politics, and she studied public affairs, thinking that would be her way of positively impacting the world. She could not have known then that her career journey would lead her back to the beauty world — although not the Mary Kay beauty world of her tween years — where she would discover that there are lots of ways to contribute to the planet and that marketing clean, sustainable beauty is one of...

How To Succeed In Podcasting

Networking has always been a top way to attract high-paying clients, but podcasting is a new spin on the strategy. Five years ago, Jodi Katz started her top-rated podcast, WHERE BRAINS MEET BEAUTY™, as a way to network within her industry in a way that felt rightsized for her personality. “I’ve always been someone who feels really at ease one-on-one with new people, but I freeze when in a group,” says Katz. “The bite-sized interview format of my show felt both safe and empowering to me as I explored a medium that was new to me.” Katz has been a respected voice in the beauty and wellness industry for almost 20 years, 15 of them as founder and creative director of Base Beauty Creative Agency. She started her career in advertising at the legendary agency BBDO, followed by positions on the editorial side of Cosmopolitan and Glamour magazines. “I saw the podcast as a way to dig deeper and learn more about my peers than I could by quickly asking about their kids or their last job while...

What’s the Time? It’s HETIME! — Samantha Bergmann and Christopher Carl, Co-Founders of HETIME

With an increased focus on skincare has come the need for a line emphasizing the importance of skincare (and self-care) for men. Men’s skin and self-care come together in the hybridized brand, HETIME, co-founded by Samantha Bergmann and Christopher Carl.  It all started with a simple phone call. Christopher, who had just left his previous job, began to think about his passions and what he really wanted to do. His love for beauty and branding, coupled with a desire to fill a niche, brought him and Samantha to the creation of their male-focused skin-self care brand, HETIME. According to Sam, the title alludes to the time that men can (and should!) take for their skin and self-care rituals. Their belief is that skincare is self-care — the ritual is just as important as the products sold. HETIME’s launch was marked by the release of their own sheet masks. However, it quickly became apparent that the demand for men’s skincare expanded beyond this — prompting them both to expand...

Live, Laugh, Love What You Do — Even In Retail: Wisdom from Melissa Sperau

If there’s one thing Melissa Sperau knows how to do, it’s how to make people laugh. In talking with her this week, I got to experience first-hand the power she holds — in her ability to lead, her plethora of experience in makeup, retail and photography, and in her sharp sense of humor. (To name but a few!) As the President of US Shiseido Americas Corporation, Melissa knows a thing or two about the pressures of the workplace — and the ways in which to mitigate them. One such way is through humor, which she believes is integral to surviving high-stress environments, such as in retail and in executive positions, both of which she has experience in. Laughing is a simple way to make each day more enjoyable! Born into a family of medical professionals, Melissa was not one to follow along a traditional path. Much to the initial disappointment of her parents, she grew up wanting to be a fashion photographer — to which she attended a local college in Maryland. She never saw the value in...

Hard Work, Trust and a Little Bit of Pixie Dust — Stephanie Morimoto’s Success Story

Having dreamed of following in her grandfather’s footsteps, Stephanie decided to study chemistry in pursuit of a career in optometry. Although she realized that it wasn’t the path for her, she knew that she still wanted to help people. A desire to uplift her community by providing jobs, resources and increasing access to opportunities followed her, where she ended up working for a large company — McKinsey. She then took these lessons into her next job where she worked at an organization geared towards helping mothers of color become entrepreneurs. The common thread that ran throughout all of their stories was that of their child’s education — many of the mothers’ entrepreneurial aspirations were created in the hopes of being able to afford better schooling for their children. Which got Stephanie thinking: How could she use her business knowledge to better the education system? This revelation prompted her to work for two nationally-based education nonprofits, aimed at providing...

Less Is More – Making the Most Out Of a Specialty Brand: Sara Happ, CEO and Founder of Sarah Happ Inc.

Being an entrepreneur is not easy. Every day brings new challenges and it’s up to us to learn how to navigate them as smoothly as possible. Take my guest this week, Sara Happ, who’s the CEO and Founder of her own brand, Sara Happ. Through her experience owning and operating a beauty brand, Sara shared a valuable piece of advice given to her by her brother. This is what he said on the subject of overcoming challenges, "It doesn’t get easier, you just get better at rolling with the things." Wise words! In Sara’s experience, this has shown itself through the hurdles she currently faces in her work, which she says aren’t dissimilar to the ones she's faced at earlier stages of her brand. We’re all dealing with the same problems at different magnitudes — as explained by Sara, "kitchen problems versus Nordstrom problems." It’s all about figuring out ways to manage that stress — to prepare yourself for whatever challenge lay ahead. Right from the jump, Sara was met with her fair share of...

When Your Work Is Not Your Life: Jeremy Soine, CEO of Face Reality

Have you ever worked a job where you’ve felt as if you were only valued by the amount of work you do? While I worked my last full-time job, I often felt as if I had little time to do anything outside of work. Thankfully the days of ego-centric and competitive thinking in the workplace are coming to a close. Treating those who work for you as humans first is becoming a pervasive mindset throughout the beauty industry, both Jeremy Soine, CEO of Face Reality, and I agree. Some may call it a Gen-Z way of thinking, but I think that it shows a much-needed change for the better! Why would you want to see your employees as just that — employees — when you could instead celebrate who they are outside of the workplace too? Jeremy shared some excellent insights on this, sharing that his ability to trust his team allowed them to trust him more — when he gives, he gets back tenfold. A huge contributor to his forward-thinking leadership style is in his own experience in his career. Never one to...

Introducing K-Beauty’s US Takeover: Sarah Lee and Christine Chang, Co-Founders and Co-CEOs of Glow Recipe

All you need is a willingness to succeed, the knowledge to back it up, and a unique concept to build dreams into a reality — all lessons I learned from my time with Christine Chang and Sarah Lee, Co-Founders and Co-CEOs of Glow Recipe! Where did their journeys begin? Christine first wanted to become a visual artist, spending most of her time painting, which helped in her transition from Louisiana to Korea. Once she moved, she struggled to adapt to the language differences and academic standards. However, as you’ll see as a common theme throughout both of their stories, Christine didn’t let this defeat her. On the contrary, she ended up attending business school at Washington University in St. Louis where she developed a love for entrepreneurship, and eventually worked as an intern at L’Oreal. Sarah’s story follows a similar cadence — from age 5, Sarah dreamed of becoming a pianist until she moved to Hong Kong, where she learned that she’d have to relearn the entire curriculum....

The Way Of the Warrior Is Forward – Resilience with Evelyn Subramaniam, Founder of Bija Essence

Evelyn Subramaniam, Founder of Bija Essence, discovered her knack for entrepreneurship at an early age. She describes having “played shop” with her toys, arranging them as if they were on a store front. I’d like to think that she was a visionary at this age, paving the way for her future self! However, Evelyn first decided to explore the world of modeling and reporting during her teenage and young adult years after winning a modeling contest in New York City. She worked as a model and reporter for Univision for a while before eventually deciding to run her own business — Bija Essence. Flash to present — all of her career-related dreams came true! It was the skills that she learned from her time in these industries that prepared her for her role at Bija Essence. Her resilience — which I was in awe of when I first met her — helped tremendously in the pursuit of her own brand. No matter what was thrown at her, Evelyn didn’t let it define her. After all, every no is a step closer...
